Elks, bears, bisons, wolves, cariboos travel into the lands freed from the ice - but this happened ten thousands of years ago. But still today there are places that give you an imagination of what was happening back then, like the southwest of Alaska. The unstable way of life was the motor to the development of many different kinds of animals. Again and again populations were isolated and had to cope with the local enviroment so that new subspecies developed. The rough enviroment is very demanding and created a very resistant animal world. Andreas Kieling voyaged into the icy realms of Alaska and nothern Canada for 2 1/2 years, documenting at the Edge of the Ice how animals claimed new land from the melting giants. In this pathless regions filming was very exhaustive and sometimes dangerous as there are no sequences with captured animals at all.
